Teacher's attitude  affects the students' performance in class and in their lives

"The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called "truth" _                                              Dan Rather.

In reality, the students don't need their teachers to IMPOSE them; rather, they need to be INSPIRED by them. Professors should serve as role models for their students, as stated in this article - because it is from them that students grow effectively and efficiently.

We have surely already known a teacher who always yells at his students, blaming them for their failure and overloading them with schoolwork most of their time other than helping them learn from other life's perspectives. A teacher who, in the class, does not take the time to interact and listen and understand his/her learners outside of school activities.

On the other side, It's not unexpected that we've already heard from students who complain that some of their teachers are ruining their lives by causing them stress and turmoil. Others have completely different arguments on this. The latter respond enthusiastically to the prospect of taking a class taught by a so-called "cool teacher"

By contrasting these two instances, we can see that students who have a close relationship and parenting with their teacher perform well in their class, even if the student's intellectual level is poor. Scientists, sociologists, and psychologists from all around the world have put a lot of effort into this study.

"When I was in my 5th year in high school, I had a math teacher named Sosthene. He was a very smart man. Every day he would give his lesson for the first 30–40minutes of class and then he would give us exercises to do. If we had questions, we could go and get help from him at his desk. Not being a very good math student, I often struggled to understand exactly what I had to do. So, I would go back to his desk and tell him that I did not get it and ask him to explain it to me differently. He had developed with us, a form of fusional communication, that we did not hesitate to approach him without fear, but rather with benevolence. I admit that this attitude towards me and my colleagues had allowed us to work hard, and always have good grades so that we make him proud in return. This feeling of creating joy for our teacher encourages us to keep the atmosphere of happiness in our class. And this had a big impact on the performance of all of us (including those who did not excel in math). At the end of the school year, all of us passed with good grades in his course.", declared Sandrine Uwacu, a Journalism department student at the University of Rwanda, during our discussion on the issue.

If the teacher is ineffective, students under the teacher’s tutelage will achieve inadequate progress academically. This is true regardless of how similar or dissimilar the students are in terms of academic attainment potential.

"It's funny how I don't even know what my computer teacher's smile looks like. I doubt he even knows one of his students' names. He only comes to teach his lesson and then leaves. I never exceeded the average in his course"_ Samuel Isa.

Who is a good teacher ?_ (student perspective)

Teachers are seen by students as the authority, role models, and the only source of all knowledge and information in the formal classroom setting. Students will learn and be trained if the teachers use good methods and have a positive attitude towards teaching.

Students drown from their teachers’ disposition to form their own attitudes which may eventually affect their learning outcomes. The attitude of teachers towards their students must be positive to carry them along (Yara, 2009).

As a teacher, have you ever felt bad for failing a student? Or have you ever yelled at your learner after the latter has failed your assessment?

As an effective teacher, you want nothing more than to see your students happy, confident, and successful. Unfortunately, despite your best efforts, your student is bound to face some setbacks.

The question is _ How do you react to this situation?

Failing exams or work school can be a particularly painful experience for a student and can leave him/her wondering how to move forward. However, even if your learners failed or even just got poor results there are ways to comfort them- and still set them up for future success, rather than shouting or using deceitful words that can only increase the tension and make them feel useless (This can affect their emotive element. )

As an effective teacher, it is worth not comparing your student's progress to that of their classmates. It can be easy to feel like you are failing as a teacher if your student isn’t achieving- but you aren’t! Comparisons are bad for students, especially if they become a habit in the long term( Yes even some research has shown that it can be a master booster to those who fail, to work harder)

School can be a stressful time, and comparing themselves to others just contributes to that stress. Encourage your students to make goals for themselves and have them focus on their own self-improvement, not on other students. Keep in mind that they are all different, even tho they receive the same education from you. And understand that you will not save everyone, but at least you will protect their low esteem to get into trouble.

The following ideas were gotten from Nasiru Ismael's article_ a student from Sule Lamido University Kafin Hausa (Jigawa State, Nigeria)

Research evidence shows that teachers have an important influence on students’ academic performance. They play a crucial role in educational attainment because the teacher is ultimately responsible for translating policy into action and principles based on practice during interaction with the students

Furthermore, the teacher is the driving force of the educational system. But, it is very unfortunate that many teachers fail to realize their importance to the educational system. Some of them refuse to realize that the way they teach, behave and interact with students can be more permanent than what they teach.

One’s attitude towards any subject, job, or situation determines the person's performance in that particular field of study. If a teacher develops a positive attitude towards his/her job, it would make the teacher work harder towards the success of his/her students. When the students noticed that their teachers are hard-working and have concern for them, it motivates them and this will result in a good performance in the subject of discussion (Yara, 2009).

Several studies have elaborated on the influence of teachers’ attitudes on children’s performance :

  • Mucella, Melis, and Ahu (2011) investigated the effects of teachers’ attitudes on students’ personalities and performance in Instanbul Turkey. The finding from their study showed that teachers’ positive attitudes have positively influenced students’ personality as well as their life performances.
  • Shittu and Oanite (2015) that teachers’ attitudes highly influence students' interest in learning.
  • In the work of Wirth and Perkins (2013), it was revealed that teachers’ attitudes contributed significantly to student attention in classrooms.
  • Adesoji and Olatunbosun (2008) asserted in their study that student attitude was related to teacher characteristics.

Spec-Tacular Mind Opinion

Teachers can set a successful and effective state of their student's performance not only in class grades but also in their lives.

The educator should keep in mind that the parents of the students have placed their trust in you to contribute to their children's education rather than their decline. What you must understand is that you are holding a valuable key that can either open or close the door to flawless performance in the lives of your students, not only just in class.
